Update #1
š Our First Guest with Access Needs
A few weeks ago, I got a booking request from a mother searching for an accessible vacation home. Her younger daughter uses a walker, and they were thrilled to find a barrier-free space that could make their trip smoother and more inclusive.
I canāt tell you how excitedāand honestly, a little nervousāI was. While Iāve invested so much into making the home truly accessible, I hadnāt yet hosted a guest with mobility needs. I wanted them to feel not just accommodated, but welcomed.
They arrived with ease, enjoyed the patio, BBQ, and firepit togetherāwith no one left out. Afterwards, I received this feedback:
āThis was our first time renting a home that was ADA, and it was so helpful for our daughter. The accessibility of the hallway bathroom was great!ā
That moment made every detail, every dollar, every hour worth it. This is exactly why I do what I do, and I hope itās the first of many similar stays.
Update #2
š Weāre āBecoming rentABLEā Certified!
Weāre now officially listed as a Mobility Certified vacation rental on Becoming rentABLEās databaseāa trusted resource for accessible short-term stays.
With fewer than 0.1% of vacation rentals offering mobility features, this certification is huge. It means we meet strict requirements like:
32ā+ entrance door
28ā+ interior doors
Step-free entry or portable ramp
Step-free access to main living areas, bedroom, and bathroom
Many vacation rental owners already have many of these filters such as keyless entry, hard surface flooring, and a handheld shower head. Easy wins can be adding wheelchair access to a microwave, hanging a lowered/tilted mirror, installing comfort height toilets, and swapping out door knobs with lever style door handles. Being pet-friendly is also an accessibility feature!
We are honored to have been featured on their Instagram. Check out the post here! I first connected with Becoming rentABLEās founder, Lorraine Woodward, over a year ago for advice on making my property truly accessible. She warned me that it wouldn't be easy, but it'd be worth it. She was right.
Next up: Cognitive Certificationāwhich includes features like blackout curtains, non-fluorescent lighting, and scent-free cleaning products.
If youād like to learn how to get certified for your own property, let me knowāIād love to share what Iāve learned.
